Sierra Sojourns

Images & Words by Vern Clevenger

Second Edition, more gorgeous than ever! Arrives June 15th. Also available in hardcover while they last!

Vern Clevenger has been exploring the High Sierra for 35 years, first as a climber with many first ascents, more recently as an accomplished photographer who now uses large format cameras almost exclusively. Such cameras provide a unique kind of image which is supremely suited to the grand landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. He shares the powerful aesthetics of his more-famous photographer friends, Galen Rowell and Claude Fiddler, but produces images that are uniquely his. Clevenger has learned to use them, and his talented darkroom technique, to produce powerful and evocative images of many of his favorite places. And he has hiked, backpacked and climbed all of the Sierra. He and his family have twice hiked the entire John Muir Trail, the first time with his son still in diapers! His knowledge of and love for the Sierra shine forth in these, his favorite Sierra images.

From the Introduction by former Olympic skier and eastside preservationist Andrea Mead Lawrence: "His images share special mountain moments deeply lived.... He seeks images that will convey his experiences of this alpine world through essences of light and reflection.... The images collected here share experiences of a landscape at once breathtaking in its familiarity, yet always startlingly new."

2008, 64 pages, 9" x 9", full-color cover with French endflaps, 42 large color photographs, 1 black & white photograph. Published by the Vern Clevenger Gallery of Fine Photography.
